Blue Cochins

A member of the Backyard Chickens forum asked me to take some pics of my blue cochins. I figured if I was going to go to the trouble to actually take pictures, I might as well share them here too.

I got these birds as day-old chicks from Cackle hatchery in April of 2011. They’ve been nice chickens to have around, they haven’t ever looked bad from over-mating or molting, and the Splash hen even “grannied” some chicks from my broody Dominique hen last summer.

I originally had 2 roosters, but the bigger, prettier one was a big jerk and when he tried to flog me, he went to live in a neighbor’s stew pot. Little Peep, the remaining rooster, has always been very respectful of me, my kids, and the hens, so he gets to stay and decorate our yard.

I really think that, despite the fairly ordinary brown eggs they lay, if I had to stick with only one type of chicken, these would be it.

This bantam Splash hen is The Taterbug’s most beloved pet. She reminds me of a cranky little old lady, but she puts up with children remarkably well, and has even spent some time on stage.
